Designer Aimo Katajamäki took an unconventional approach to Alvar Aalto. The reverse of the coin bears a drawing of Alvar Aalto superimposed by a pattern evoking the shape of the Savoy Vase. The obverse features the mints’ shared Europa Star symbol and Finland’s national Lion emblem.

The maximum mintage of the proof-quality EUR 10 silver collector coin is 10,000, and 100 coins will be numbered. The coins are numbered on the obverse, and the numbered coins are sold separately in glass cases.

Proof-quality collector coins are minted with a polished die, finished, and placed in a protective clear plastic casing set in a gift box that tells the coin’s story.

    Alvar Aalto

Alvar Aalto (1898–1976) was a renowned pioneer of modern architecture and design. Aalto drew his inspiration from Finnish nature and tradition, but also from the history of architecture. He is known as a functionalist aiming for simple, geometric and beautiful, yet functional solutions. Aalto’s most famous work includes Paimio Sanatorium and Finlandia Hall, his stackable stools, and the Savoy Vase, frequently cited as the world’s best-known glass object. Aalto had an exceptionally wide-ranging and diverse career, both in Finland and internationally. This collector coin dedicated to Alvar Aalto is part of the Europa Star programme in which European countries release coins with the shared theme of Ages of Europe: Modern 20th Century.
